Ajahn Jayasaro (Shaun Michael Chiverton) was born in 1958 on the Isle of Wight, England. In 1978, he became a disciple of Ajahn Chah at Wat Pah Pong forest monastery in Northeast Thailand and received full ordination in 1980. After completing his initial monastic training, he spent several years alternating between solitary retreat and service to his monastic lineage. He was entrusted with writing the official biography of Ajahn Chah. From 1997 to 2002, he served as abbot of Wat Pah Nanachat, the international monastery of Ajahn Chah’s lineage.
Since 2003, Ajahn Jayasaro has lived in a hermitage near Khao Yai National Park, offering Dhamma teachings and retreats. He plays a key role in integrating Buddhist principles into Thai education. His teachings are widely broadcast and translated. His English works include Without and Within and Stillness Flowing, a biography of Ajahn Chah completed over two decades.
He received an honorary doctorate in Buddhist pedagogy in 2011 and multiple monastic titles, including Phra Phrompacharayanmuni in 2024. In 2020, he was granted Thai citizenship and the family name ‘Potanuwat’ by royal decree. Ajahn Jayasaro continues to inspire both laypeople and monastics through his teachings and writings.
